What they look for in an au pair |
Someone responsible, mature, fond of children, able and willing to take the initiative, pro active and creative and ready to interact with the children in the foreing language parents request to the au pair.
This last item is quite important and similar to—for example—au pairing in China where parents demand a good command of English. Spanish host parents are very much interested in their kids improving their foreign language skills—mainly English— and so the au pair must have a good command of English regarless she/he can speak any Spanish. Families registered with Destino Idiomas compromise (parents) to speak in Spanish to the au pair so there is a fair balance. |
What they do not look for in an au pair |
Someone mistaken the true nature of the programme
who takes their home for a cheap hotel who does not interact with the kids who does not bother to be part of the family, share moments, meals... who does not use foreign language to address the kids who hides away into her/him room at every chance who is not punctual, reliable, responsible and mature who is more devoted to her/his mobile than to the kids who behaves as a guest and not as a "big sister" or adult in the family who does not take any initiative if help is needed who becomes a burden more than a help |
