Your health and wellbeing are a priority to you, you need to travel well covered in this respect, not only to get the medical assistance you deserve in case you need it, but also to save you facing really high medical costs if you do not have the right coverage/insurance.

And if you are going to apply for a visa, you will also have to book an insurance that mets the requirements of Spanish authorities when it comes to aprove your visa.

European Union nationals

EU nationals who have the European Health Insurance Card will get medical coverage in Spain in the same way a Spaniard would.

However, we strongly recomend to all EU au pairs to hire a private travel and medical insurance, because the European Health Insurance Card:
  • is not an alternative to travel insurance.
  • does not cover any private healthcare.
  • does not cover costs such as a return flight to your home country in case of illness or accident, lost/stolen property, repatriation, etc.
  • does not guarantee free services. As each EU country’s healthcare system is different, services that cost nothing in one EU country, might not be free in another EU country.

But also because this insurance, specifically designed for au pairs, offers au pairs interesting clauses like:

"If you need to change host family during your au pair experience, your policy covers your hotel costs up to 60€ per night, max. 7 nights"

NOTE: Spanish host families have no obligation to contribute to the cost of EU au pairs' private insurance.

NON European Union nationals

  • Non EU nationals will not get free medical coverage in Spain.
  • Regardless of the lenght of your stay, or whether you are applying or not for a visa, you need a private travel and medical insurance to cover you all along your au pair stay.
  • Medical costs can be expensive and having an insurance will provide you with the peace of mind you just need to travel safe.
  • Important: Spanish host families will reimburse half of the cost of this insurance for the period the au pair commits to stay with the host family. (Following European Agreement on Au Pair Placement, Strasbourg, 24.XI.1969 (ETS No 068), article 10).
  • If you are not applying for a visa, you can go by the standard au pair insurance, which appart from medical coverage, it includes interesting clauses like: "If you need to change host family during your au pair experience, your policy covers your hotel costs up to 60€ per night, max. 7 nights"
  • If you are applying for a visa, then you will have to book a different insurance that meets the Spanish authorities requirements to grant a visa.
